In 2017, my wife and I left the U.S. and moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand. During our two-year stay, I certified in teaching English as a second language at the Language Institute of Chiang Mai University and listed my services as a tutor on Preply.

I had no idea what to expect. I had never taught anything. Learners started signing up. The first was a Slovakian software engineer who lives in Munich. Soon I was spending an hour at a time exploring English with people from Brazil, Ukraine, Korea, Russia (in happier days), Japan, and many other countries. Nearly all of them had the same goal, to improve their English to advance their career.
